GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS - STEEL PIPE
These Standards serve three major functions.

  1. Dictate manufacturing and testing requirements and prescribed methods of measuring the required mechanicaland physical properties.
  2. Establish common ground of understanding withthe producer/supplier as to product requirements.
  3. Marking of these specification on the product, confirms that manufacturer has made the pipe ensuring the quality of steel and meeting all the requirements of the specification.

Standard pipe is manufactured and tested as prescribed by ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing Materials),an international, non-profit technical and Scientific organization formed for "the consensus development of standardson characteristics and performance of materials, products, systems and services." The society operates throughmore than 127 main technical committees. These committees function under regulations that ensure balanced representationamong producers, users and general interest groups. The published standards, therefore, represent theconsensus viewpoint of all involved.

Line pipe and Oil Country products are manufactured and tested as prescribed bythe American Petroleum Institute (API). The API operates similarly to the ASTM except that producers, consumers, and associations with primary interests in oil or gas are involved.
